NEWS BY THE ENGLISH MAIL.

AUCKLAND, Fhii. 10. The City of New York arrived from San Francisco, via Honolulu, at 5.80 a.m. to-day. She left San Francisco on Jan. 19, and Honolulu on Jan. 27, encountering tine weather on the run down. The time to Honolulu was 0 days, 21 hours, 55 minutes, ; the time from Honolulu, 12 days, 20 hours, 55 minutes. She brings for New Zealand 187 tons of cargo, 821 bans mails, and the following saloon passengers : —C. G. Howdon, Capt. Chirbourg, Deucbris, Moorhousc, Mr and Mrs Watson. Steerage—Messrs D. McLolland and 0 children. The New Zealand cargo includes 1,800 bags bone meal, 378 sacks, 20 kegs castings, 50 cases canned goods, 50 cases tisb, 80 cases paint, 17 pkgs hams and bacon. 21 boxes dried apples, and 101 pkgs salmon. Carlotta Patti is a through passenger by the steamer for Sydney. Terrific gales occurred in all parts of Great Britain and Ireland, during the week ending Dec. 32. A storm of rniu accompanied bj r lightning and snow, burst over London aud did much damage. The circuit of the gale embraced Foss Cnstle, Edinburgh, Greenock, Yarmouth, Liverpool, and Plymouth. At the latter place, a French barque was lost with eight of the crew. There is a large influx of tramps to that town, and excesses are frequent. The Dempsey family evicted from Balia have been restored ; the rent was was paid by public subscription. There is a fresh movement; regarding the Channel Tunnel Railway. People think it may be completed within the next ten years. The Queen sends £oo to the Duchess of Marlborough’s Relief Fund, which has reached ,£IO,OOO. The Lord Mayors Fund for the same purpose reached ,£‘20,000 to Xmas. Foster, £242/ Eleven men were wounded or killed by a colliery explosion near Bolton. The iron masters north of Staffordshire refuse further orders at current prices. The trade is in a flourishing condition.

The Vienna Press is of opinion that a collision between England and Russia is inevitable. General Skobcloff recently declared at a banquet that Pussia is on the eve of a national war. The Bishop of Manchester lias married Miss Duncan, of Bath. A recent article in the “ Times ” indicates the probability of the appointment of Sir Garnet Wolseley as Com-mander-in-Chief of India on his return from the Cape. laird Penzance has issued a fresh citation’ against McConachie, who disregarded the last sentence of suspension. The prospectus of a now German South Sea trading company is issued, and a subscription list opened. An ordinance from the Imperial Chancellor having reference to the undertaking is published with the prospectus, as it is calculated to attract shareholders. Davitt, Daly, Brennan, and Killen entered on appearance at the Crown Ollice, Dublin, yesterday, to write commanding the appearance of the Queen’s Bench. France intends following the example of Germany, and will give attention to the development of trade in distant countries and increase the number of French consulates.
