ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION OF THE VICEROY OF INDIA.

We regret to have to record that the arrival of Mis Kxcellencv (he Viceroy in Calcutta on Friday afternoon was signalised by a most dastardly, and to all appearances, wanton outrage. As llis Fxccllcney was on his way to (Jovennnent house, and just, as he hail passed from the bridge on to the strand road, two shots were tired at his earriage in which, besides himself, were Lady Lytkin and Captain Muir, and a third shot at the second carriage, which was occupied In' Sir C. I’. and Lady Colley, Captain Hose, and Laron Bentinck. Happily no one was struck. Indeed, neither the occupants of the Viceroy’s ’ carriage nor (ho guard accompanying it would seem to have been aware that any shot had been fired. At (be third shot, however, Sir George Colley and Captain Bose alighted from their carriage and seized the miscreant who bad tired. A small (ive-ebambered revolver was found on bis person, and lie was forthwith made over to the police. It bad been ascertained dial lie is an East Indian, by name George E. Dress. He comes of respectable family.

Owing To' weakness o£ intellect, ho has been out of work many months, and for ihc past six weeks ho ha.* boon supported in Calcutta by charitable friends, He was only lately discharged from the, Allahabad Lunatic Asylum, and his mother, who is still alive? has been deranged for about ;30 years. He is addicted to opium, and when arrested was under the influence of Hquor. He was in the Calcutta Preventive service three rears ago. He was considered b) b ; of iinsound mind, and on being discharged threatened to take the life of Mr Kilby, the superintendent of the department. About four months since he petitioned the Government regarding some injustice which he imagined had been done him in the Preventive Service, and the rejection of this petition may perhaps have led to the insane act which he committed on Friday. — l> Calcutta Lngiishman,” Dec. 13.
