WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL.
TOWN EDITION.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held yesterday. Present—Messrs Moody, McCregor, Studhohn, O’Brian, and Hayes, It was resolved that the Minister of Immigration he respectfully requested to cause the passage of Charles -Jones to be met from the public funds, it having been found that his introduction to this colony Avas a mistake, and he has been a continuous burden on public and private sources, as from medical evidence he has been found before leaving England to be incurably blind, and must, if kept here, be a burden on society during his life. The folloAving resolutions Avcrc also carried—“ That the Waimate Public Library be subsidised ;£ for £ on sub scriptions up to Dec. 81, amounting to £2B 8s (Id.” “ That this Council recommend the Chief Surveyor to accept the roads surveyed and formed in the Upper Waiho district as Government roads and issue Crown grants accordingly. Mr Hayes gaA'c notice of motion that the resolution, re slaughtering licenses, passed Jan. ’ill, 187 b, be rescinded. It was resolved to sanction the closing of a road through section 1(5,(108. Mr. J. 11. Stewart’s account for contract surveys was passed. A discussion took place rc the striking of a rate for the ensuing year. .Mr Hayes said that owing to the depression felt throughout the colony, and the bad prospects of anything like a good harvest, he did not think it advisable that a rate should be struck. Mr McCregor asked Avhat Avas the amount of subsidy received last year, and Avas informed that it amounted to £7OOO. He then said it Avould be a pity to lose such a large sum of money, and -suggested a sixpenny rate. Mr Studholme objected to a shilling rate at the present time. Air Hayes said that it must be shown that money is required before a rate could bo struck. The matter was postponed. The engineer’s report Avas read. Mr McCregor suggested that the fidl penalties be inflicted on contractors whose contract time has expired, and that they he not alloAved the benefit of the resolution passed at the last meeting for extension of time during the harvest. Mr Hayes thought the Council should not be too hard on contractors Avho AA'ere behind, in consequence of the A'cry Avet season, and moved “That C. 11. Clarke be allowed an extension of time to April 24 next to complete his contract, as applied for.” The motion Avas carried. Unsolved—That the chief surveyor be informed that (he Council agrees to the deviation in road-line through rural section 7104, Parcora District. The following tenders were accepted : —Contract No. 841 : J. Phil)), .£llsO Os tld. No. 840: Walker and McKenzie, £lBOl 4s. Consideration of other tenders was postponed. It Avas resolved that no advertising be done in Thnaru except in special cases. It Avas resolved that no progress payments be made at present on account of contracts whose term for completion expired before2lst instant. The rate roll for 1880 Avas placed on the table.
