[Per “ Times” Special Wire.! Free library. Arc kland, Jan. 21. — Steps are being taken to hasten on the establishment of a free public library. Notice has been given by the committee of the Mechanics’ Institute to return all books and application will be made for the old Provincial Council Library, now in the custody of the Auckland Institute, land for Settlement. Mr Rolieston has telegraphed to the Mayor of the Thames, that land is open for sale at Te Aroa, and 18,000 acres more will be open shortly. The land thrown open comprises a series of small sections of from five to ten acres each, and rural sections averaging 100, acres. There is no land open under the deferred payment system. The drainage works proposed will cost £3125. Another Fed. Wellington', Jan. 21. —Young Fraser commenced his task of walking 10G miles in 24 hours at nine o’clock last night. He finished his GOth mile at eleven this morning. He is going very well. After finishing 07 miles Fraser gave in, having fainted. Drowned in the Waterworks. A little hoy, aged 8, son of Mr Gore, caretaker of the reservoir, was drowned last night in a stream formed by the waste water from the reservoir. A Search Renewed. Christchurch, Jan. 21 —Police have resumed the search for the body of George Yeuuell, who is supposed to have been murdered at IN'ew Brighton, about the 6th Aug. last. A number of constables and detectives are examining the river and the vicinity of Ycnuell’s house to-day. Pedigree Wheat. A farmer at Majorca, Victoria, has written to Mr Murphy, Secretary to the Agricultural Association, asking him to obtain at any cost a small quantity of pedigree wheat from M . H. Moldy-of Kent, Fngland. about which Mr Murphy has recently sent circulars to all the large wheat growers of New Zealand, with the view of introducing its importation to the colony. Trotting; Match. Morling’s mare, Victoria, bolted yesterday when proceeding in a sulky to the staVting place, and had to be driven in a dog-cart for the trotting match. The attendance was very large on the Lincoln road, and a good bit of money changed hands. •’ ; Trout Fishing:. A beautifully marked trout was taken last night night out of the Avon with a minnow. It measured 204 inches, and weighed 10j lbs.
