DROWNED IN THE RANGITATA
An inquest was held at Watkins’ Hotel Rangitata, on Thursday last before F. Guinness Esq. Coronor and a jury, touching the death of Thomas Thompson, who was found lying dead in the Rangitata river on Thursday last. The deceased was a single man, a laborer by trade, well-known in the district, and lived when out of employment at the Waihi Bush. He left his house on* Jan. 11 to go to Mr Wilsons station, north of the Rangitata river, About 5 30 p.m. he arrived at Watkins’ Hotel, called for a glass of beer and left imraediatelyafterwards, being quite sober at the time. Later in the evening he was seen riding along the south side of the river, and this appears to have been the last time he was seen alive. On Tuesday the saddle, with the girth broken and one of the stirrups missing, and a swag containing blankets &c., were found by Mr Watkins, who presently found the body of the missing man a little further down the river. The jury returned a verdict of “ Found drowned.”
