A lad employed at the Heathcote Scouring Works had a narrow escape yesterday afternoon, from being killed. Oamaru, Jan. 16.—A thunderstorm, accompanied by a heavy fall of rain and hail, occurred here about midday, travelling in a northerly direction. It was of short duration, but sufficiently severe to do a large amount of harm to the crops. A Vote of Censure. Dunedin, Jan. 16. —The Coroner’s jury that enquired into the circumstances attending the death of James Taylor, Cromwell, added a rider, censuring Thomas Anderson, at whose house deceased died, for inhumanity. Dividing the Carcase. After a whole day’s debate, the Presbyterian Synod agreed to endow in the University a chair of English literature,political economy,constitutional liistory. Thirty-six voted for it, and 16 for Dr Copeland’s motion to make the chair one of political economy and moral philosophy in the Presbyterian Hall if the University Council again refused to accept it. Professor. Salmond’s motion to endow a chair of natural philosophy and experimental physics was negatived by 32 to 23. Some strong language, at the expense of the University Council and the supporters of the Hon W. H. lleynolds’ Bill of last session, was indulged in by the minority. Workmen’s Grievances. Workmen on the unemployed section of the Central railway held a meeting over their grievances, and decided to petition the Government for an increase of pay and regular payments. Burled Alive. Alex. Forbes, a miner, was killed by a fall of eartli in a claim near Naseby last night.
