THE ACCIDENT TO THE S.S. PENGUIN.
Additional particulars concerning the accident to the Union Company’s s.s. Penguin at Tauranga Heads yesterday have been received. It appears that a terrific northwest gale was blowing and the Penguin while entering the harbor was blown on a bank in a straight line between the wreck of the Taupo and the sulphur works. The steamer Statfa was immediately despatched to her assistance, and on her arriving at the spot took on board the passengers and mails and brought them to town safely. Efforts were then made to get the Penguin off, which were successful, and the vessel is now riding at anchor in the harbor. She sustained no injury, and should the weather moderate she will leave for the South.
Tauranga, Jan. 14. The Penguin was got off the sand hillock at 11 this, morning, with the assistance of the tender Staff a. No damage is done. Neither cargo nor coni were moved. Her light hedges came home or else she would have got off where she first touched.
