The Chiniquy Sensation.
Christchurch, Jan. 6. Pastor Chiniquy’s welcome to Christchurch, passed at yesterday’s meeting of the Ministers’ Association, is causing a good deal of talk in town to-day. The Mayor will not dismiss the special constables until after Chiniquy’s visit.
Thomas Wisdom, alias Ramsay, for larceny, was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. Gr. F. Lee, alias Smith, for a similar offence, received two years.

Harvest preparations.
Christchurch, Jan. 6. Twelve reapers and binders passed through Ashburton yesterday to commence work on Wednesday next. The crops have been brought to a forward state by the recent warm weather.
A Congregation alarmed.
At the Catholic Church last night there was a fair attendance to hear the Rev. Father O’Malley’s lecture on the Catacombs. Just before the commencement of the lecture two loud reports in quick succession, as ot explosions, caused considerable consternation, in, view of the recent events. The cause was found however, to be boys playing with fireworks, and the audience soon forgot the circumstance in the interest excited by an admirable lecture.
The Municipal Rights.
The City Council at last night’s meeting determined to take steps to set at rest the question how far they can be overridden by companies taking possession of the streets for pipe laying and other purposes, thereby stopping all traffic. Pastor Chiniquy Welcomed.
At the Ministers’ Association, held jmsterday, the following resolution was moved by the Rev J. Elmslic, seconded by the Rev A. Reid', and, after being warmly supported by eight other clergymen, was unanimously carried : “That this Association having heard there is a likelihood of the Rev. Mr Chiniquv visiting this part of the colony, and being of opinion that his visit would in many ways bo conducive to the furtherance of the interests of Bible truth, agree very cordially to bid him welcome.”
An Eccentric Jockey Club. Duxediu, Jan. 6. —The Dunedin Jockey Club have re-appointed Caleb Moore as handicappcr. James Hazlett, Yice-President, has resigned in consequence. A Fat Haul. Between £I3OO and £I4OO was taken as gate money at the Caledonian gathering.
