[Per “Times” Special Wire.] AUCKLAND, Dec. (3. A party of surveyors have started to survey the New North Railway line from Helcnsville. Richard Appelby Coates, who recently arrived from the South, died suddenly at the Victoria Hotel. ■ He was about 50 years of age, and possessed a diploma as a chemist and druggist, issued by the Queensland Medical Board. DUNEDIN, Dec. 6. J. B. Dunn, canvasser for the “ Tribune,” when alighting from a tram car while in motion this morning, foil, and the wheels passing over his right arm, smashed it in several places. It is feared amputation will be necessary. WELLINGTON, Dec. 6.
The Mercantile Agency Company report under date London, 3rd inst: — The wool market is unchanged. Homo buyers arc purchasing freely, but the continental demand is limited. Competition on French account is sluggish. A good many second-hand parcels have been offered during the past sales. The sales close on the 6th instant. Up to date about 87,000 bales have been sold. The tallow market is flat, with no trade or speculative demand. Supplies of town melted are heavy. Best mutton is worth 38s 6d per cwt, best beef, 36s 6d. The wheat market is quiet, and foreign arrivals arc heavy. Adelaide is worth 60s per 496ibs, New Zealand 58s per 4961 bs. The leather market is firm with a good trade demand. Best sides are worth Is per lb. The Spiritualists of Auckland entertain Mrs Brittain at a valedictory teameeting on Monday evening, when she will be presented with a testimonial and a book of ferns. The Rev, M. Edgar is drawing out qt his challenge, and in consequence a lively discussion is going on in the “ Star.”
WANGANUI, Dec. 6. Dr Earle was savagely attacked in his surgery this morning, by a madman named Antonio. The man, after having some conversation with the doctor, during which he applied for admission to the, hospital, took the opportunity of the doctor’s back being turned, to strike him on the back of the head with a large stone. Dr Earle was stunned for a time, and is now suffering from the blow. Antonio made his escape. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 6. At the Police Court this morning, Thomas Evans, on remand, for stealing a cheque for £3O, was committed for trial. LYTTELTON, Dec. 6. Arrived New Zealand Shipping Co.’s ship Hurunui, from London ; 110 days out. All well.
