THE REV. GEORGE BROWN.
MANSLAUGHTER CASE. There have been high-jinks in Fiji over the indictment of the Rev. George Brown, of New Britain massacre, notoriety for manslaughter. The rev. gentleman was the guest of the Governorof Eiji when he was informed that he.was wanted for-killing the Natives. The Governor became very angry and resolved to try the case, and quarrelled .with the Chief Justice because the latter put in his claim to deal with the Missionary. The Governor insisted on holding a Court, however, and at this he stated that “ in his opinion there were no grounds for criminal proceedings.” This seems practically to have (l settled the difficulty for a few days, ' later when the Bov. George appeared before the third Commissioner there was no prosecutor and the Court . declined to proceed. The General Secretary for Australasia of the Wesleyan Society writes to the “ Society Herald,” stating that when Mr Brown appears before him he intends delivering the following judgement“ lam unable to prosecute the inquiry which the Secretary of State oi’dered me to conduct, the Judical Commissioner having taken the matter out of my hands, but I am bound to state that no evidence has been brought to my notice which would have led me to recommend the institution of criminal procecd-
ings.”
