LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. 'Wrsdxesdav, Dec. 3. Several Bills wore read a first time. The Timaru Waterworks Bill and Reprints of Statutes Bill were read a third time. Several motions were withdrawn. HOUSE OE KEPKESENTATIVES. Wednesday, Dec. 3. In reply to a question, Mr Rollcston said the Government had nothing to do with the foundation stor e of the new Supreme Courthouse, and wcic not responsible for the inscription, “In the year of Light, 5883.’, Mr Reeves suggested that the year of taxation, not “light,” was meant. The report of the Debates Committe recommending that Hansard be condensed was not adopted. The motion of Mr Reeves aflirming the desirability of imposing a duty on coal occasioned some debate, but nothing resulted. The Timaru Waterworks Bill was rcp jrted and finally adopted. The Rating Act Amendment Bill was also passed. Mr Whitaker's motion re grant of L 200,000 to the provincial district of •> uck- . and was negatived, as was Mr Macandrew’s motion for half a million to Otago. The Married Women’s Property Bill was read a second time.
The Licensing Bill was discharged. Bir George Grey moved the second reading of the New Zealand Constitution Act Amendment Bill. After considerable discussion, a motion by Mr Pyke that the debate be adjourned, was carried by 43 to 29.
