TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Board H as held on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1879. Present—Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Hayhurst, Barker, Quinn and Ensor. peputaoions. Mr C. Bissctt attended to ask the Board to allow him some timber to erect a bridge over Penny’s Creek to enable him to got on bis land. Resolved, that timber be furnished. Mr Bissett supplying the labor to erect the bridge. Mr,Job Brown attended to request that the Board would shingle Davie and Cass streets. The Surveyor was instructed to investigate the matter. Mr Brown also asked that the kerbing of the footpath near his place, in the main street, might bo repaired. Resolved, that the kerbiug be deferred for the purpose of proving how the concrete kerbing already put down will answer.
Mr Roberts Interviewed the Board to ask the Board to have the roadside drain near his place cleaned out. Resolved, that the Surveyor inspect and report upon it. Mr Roberts further complained that the drain now being cut for the purpose of throwing certain water down the creek running through Trevenua was likely, if persisted in, to damage Mr Grigg’s property. Resolved, that steps be taken to have the water conveyed through its natural channel. Mr Martin interviewed the Board to ask that ho be allowed a progress payment on his contract.
'Resolved, that as soon as the clerk obtain a certificate from the surveyor that the work is finished satisfactorily, he make out a cheque for the signature of the chairman and two members of the Board, and the same he paid to him.
Mr Prattley attended to ask the Board to allow him to fence across the land he rents in the swamp. The request was granted, subject to conditions.
Mr Prattley was allowed some timber to put a bridge over a drain, to allow access to his land.
Mr D. Henry asked the Board to have a low place filled up on the footpath near his section. The surveyor was instructed to look into the matter and, if necessary, have it done.
Mr Popplowcll applied to the Board to do something for him byway of supplying him with work. The surveyor was instructed to employ him if at any time he had anything to put in his way. Resolved, that the clerk write to the Colonial Treasurer to inform him that the £2O expended by the Board in entertaining ISir George Grey, had been refunded to the district fund account, and that the auditors had been advised of the same.
Mr Barker proposed, Mr Quinn seconded, and it was adopted, “That in future the carting be distributed as evenly as possible, by giving each expressman a month’s work, turnabout, so long as the work is done satisfactorily.” Mr Eusor proposed. Mr Quinn seconded, and it was carried—“ That the remainder of the Boiling Down road be clayed 3Uft wide.” Mr Barker proposed, Mr Hayhurst seconded, and it was carried —“ That the attention of the Government, through the Member for the district, be called to the very objectionable practice private individuals have fallen into of laying out townships with halfchain roads and expecting Hoad Boards to take over and form them ; that this Board protests against the practice as being detrimental to the public interest, and would suggest that some steps be taken to prohibit, in future, the laying of roads of less width than one chain.”
Mr Ensor proposed, Mr Quinn seconded, and it was carried—“ That as the Levels Road Board have refused to co-operate with this Board in bridging the Opihi river that the Government be requested to take the same steps as they have done in the matter of the Rangitata bridge, i.e., to carry out the work and charge the cost to the Road Boards south of the Rangitata.” Mr Barker applied, on behalf of Mr E. H. Barker, to keep a gate on cither end of the Ohapi Swamp road. Granted on the usual conditions. The Clerk was instructed to write to Messrs Rolleston, Cox, &c., drawing their attention to their agreement with the Board relative to their share of tire costs of the drains through the Orari Swamp, and that they be requested to pay the same. Some complaint was made with reference to the boundary road leading from Deßenzio’s to the Kakahu road, across the Valley river. The Surveyor was ordered to see to the matter.
Mr Q.uiun stated that Mr Irvine complained of the Hood water near his gateway. The Surveyor was instructed to attend to it.
Mr Talbot brought under notice the bad condition of the main Waitohi road. Kcsolvcd that the Chairman and Surveyor examine the road, and tenders be called for shingling it where found necessary. The Clerk pointed out that it would be necessary for the Hoard to settle upon some day in January to elect two members in the place of Messrs Talbot and Barker, who retire by rotation, and also to elect a Returning Officer in the room of Dr Raynor, deceased. It was resolved unanimously that Mr "William Wills be elected Returning Officer for the Temuka Road Board, and requested to take such steps as are necessary for the election. Resolved that the Clerk be authorised to employ Mr Popple well to examine and audit his rale and deposit accounts in time for the annual meeting.
Mr Mclnucs interviewed the Board with reference to some extras to be claimed on Ids contract, and also asking the Board (o favorably consider the amount of time he had lost in waiting for timber. It was resolved, after careful consideration, that Mr Mclnnos be paid the sum of £8 as compensation for loss of time, and the sum of £3B 11s (3d for extras. coimKsroxuExcij. From the poundkeeper, asking for sundries for the pound, lleferrcd to the Surveyor. From Powell and Lidscy, asking for extension of time to complete their contract. Granted for one month. From Mrs Hrßayner, acknowledging receipt of the Board’s letter of condolence. From Charles Xevil, asking for timber to put a small bridge over the road drain. Granted. The Surveyor’s report haring been read and considered, the following work
was ordered to be done, viz. :—Tenders to be called for performing u portion of Kakalm road, approved of; an 18 inch pipe drain to be put across the main road near Bailey’s ; a pipe drain to be put in View street, near Bryant’s; a track to be formed near Mr Nicholson’s land ; piping to be laid across the street near Mr Storey’s land, and side channel cleaned out; footpath asked for by Mr Johnston and others to be formed; tenders to be called for erection of a new foot bridge near Holloway’s. The following tenders were accepted : No. 90 —W. Kennedy, at 4s per chain. No. 91 —J. Bobcrtson, at Is per yard. No. 92 —C. Flynn, LlOl 16s 2d. No. 93—Butler and Divane, L 341. No. 91 —F. Turner, at 3s 6d per chain. No. 96 —W. Fletcher, LllO. No. 97 —Connor and Sullivan, L 97. No. 98—Connor and Sullivan, L 94. Accounts amounting to Ll7lß 4s 7d were passed for payment.
