[Pee “ Times” Special Wiee.l AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. On Friday a child belonging to the lighthouse keeper at Iriti took dangerously ill. A flag of distress was flying, but was never noticed till the Hero passed yesterday. The corpse had been kept since Saturday night. The Custom’s launch immediately loft the port and brought the body and parents to Auckland. The Patetri survey is reported to be stopped by the Government, and J. M. Creigh and a large staff arc ordered to leave. A Maori dropped down dead while hawking fish at Pokatea, Coromandel. Verdict: Dcatli from natural causes. A petition was sent to the City Council this morning by the unenr ployed, asking for employment until such time as the Government are pro’ pared to undertake some public works. The petition states that 200 men were idle last night. The Ilcv. Mr Edgar, Unsectarian Minister, took occasion, at Mrs Britten’s lecture, to state his readiness to vindr cate the lady’s views on any public platform against any 10 men who could be brought against him. Delegates of the unemployed laborers have forwarded a petition to the City Council stating that 200 men are idle, and asking for work until the Government is prepared to prosecute some public works.
WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. The Chief-Justice stated in Court to-day, that he would not be prepared to give judgment in the stamp case arising out of Rhodes’ will, until early in January. In the case Queen v. Boylau, arising out of the breach of the Anns’ Act, judgments were delivered by Justices Johnstone, Richmond, and the Chief Justice, all agreeing, though not alway on the same grounds, that the conviction against the prisoner should be quashed. Judge Gillies also concurred. In the appeal case from Christchurch, Cleave v. King, arrisiug out of a transaction in turnip seed, the Chief Justice delivered a long and elaborate judgment. The rule for a nonsuit was discharged with costs, and the verdict for damages granted to King in the Court below was increased to £13,000. In the Court of Appeal to-day judgment was given in the celebrated Gleich case, in which the South Australian Assignee sought to attach, for the bonclitof the South Australian creditors all monies and property found in Glcich’s possession. The Court upheld the rights of New Zealand creditors over the claims of the Assign cc. The other side threatened to appeal. At the Licensing Court to-day all applications for new licenses were refused, the Bench absolutely declining to hear any evidence on behalf of the applicants.
CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 2. A.t the Lyttelton Police Court this morning a woman named Eliza Bryant was sentenced to six months hard labor for obtaining a week’s board and lodging under false pretences. An excellent lot of roses and pot plants are staged at to-day’s rose show under the auspices of the Horticultural Society. DUNEDIN, Dec. 2. The Dunedin Jockey 7 Club last night appointed Jobbcrns and Dowse a Commit! ce to revise the old handicap. Fred. Fulton, a promising cricketer, broke his arm yesterday through colliding with another player at practice. Two totalizators were used at the Forbury yesterday. Through the accidental discharge of his companion’s gun W. Petrie, while out pigeon shooting on Sunday, received the charge in his right elbow and side at a distance of seven yards.
