AN ELOPEMENT AND ITS RESULTS.

TOWN EDITION.

An elopement from Christchurch had an inglorious and most uuromautic termination at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Patrick Eyau an elderly man with a dissipated complexion and Kate Lohenez, a married woman on whom the bloom of youth had acquired a permanent tinge were charged with vagrancy. The evidence showed that for the past week they had been leading a somewhat extraordinary life, haunting the streets by day, patronising boarding houses at night and “ sloping” without paying for their beds and meals in the morning. Having “• done” the boarding houses so that a renewed application would be dangerous, they betook themselves to the

more vulgat pursuit o£ begging and hence their arrest. It transpired that the unworthy couple hailed from Christchurch, and that the woman had eloped from her husband a Frenchman taking with her a young child who also appeared on the floor or the Court. Ryan had seen better days, for he owned a farm some time ago, but he disposed of the last acre in dissipation with his female companion before they winged their way to Timaru. The Magistrate evidently considered that wife-stealing aggravated the offence of vagrancy, for Ryan was sentenced to six months hard labor- The female prisoner was remanded till Wednesday in order that her husband may be communicated with.
