THE MASSACRE AT CLOUDY BAY.
Cooktown, Oct. 31
The Government schooner Spitfire has returned from a cruise. She was boarded by Captain Webb, of the schooner Pride of Logan, who reports the massacre of a portion of his crew (including Alexander Drew, publican, and Thomas Gorier, master mariner, both of Cooktown; Henry Mulholland, a Malay woman, and three Chinese) by natives at Cloudy Bay, near Hew Guinea. Captain Webb was fishing on a reef. On returning to the vessel he found her completely gutted. The natives had a rope hauling her ashore. Captain Webb jumped on board, cut the hawser, slipped anchor, and stood out from the bay. He returned next day, but could see nothing of the crew. The natives having taken all the arms and ammunition, he could not land, and made sail for Cooktown. The Spitfire returns to Cloudy Bay immediately.
