AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

■ 0 Melbouene, Nov. 6. The Government diver at Belfast nearly lost his life through being seized by an octopus. He was repeating his efforts to dislodge a rock, when his left side was clutched in aholc by the marine monster, and ho was unable to reach the life line, Eventually he got hold of an iron bar with one of his feet. On account of his peculiar position ho could only deal blows over handed with his other arm into the hole, during which time the octopus had increased its grip. It was twenty minutes before Small could release himself. He was in a very exhausted condition, and had great difficulty in keeping his feet down, as the air was pumped through the interior of his dress and inflated it. If his feet had got uppermost he would soon have become insensible and even if he could have reached the life line it would have resulted in his arm being broken or pulled out of the socket. His hand was sucked terribly. He describes the agony as dreadful. The affair occurred in the river Moyne.
