There was no business at the RM.’s Court this morning. Mr Richmond entered into possession of the Melville Hotel on Monday last. It is rumored that another paper will shortly be started in Waimate by a com’ pany of shareholders. There were 16 births, I death, and 2 marriages registered in the Waimate district during the month of October. It is announced in our advertising columns that shearing at the Levels shed will be commenced on Monday next. The local manager no t ides that subscrip * tions and repayments to the Otago Perma" nent Building and investment Society are due on Friday, We have been requested to mention that the time of sale of the property at Messrs Jonas, Hart and ildies' rooms on Friday has been a'tered to 12 o'clock. We would remind our readers that a soiree and bad in connection with the L.O.L No 13, Timaru. will take place in Mechanics’ Institute this evening, At the sitting of the ducation Board held to’day, it was stated' by the Inspector to ths Board that the funds remaining in hand amounted to £2odo viz,., building fund, £IOOO ; maintenance fund. £IOOO. 'he business generally was taken in Committee, if we exclude he consideration of correspondence and of the requirements existing for the teaching of chemistry in schools under the Board. We have received a copy of-thc first issue of the “ Waimate Times ” with which iscorporated the “ Waitaugi Tribune.” This paper is published under the auspices of the new company of proprietors and a slight improvement in the get up of the journal is perceptible. We learn that Mr Juncker will, assisted by several limaru amatuers, give a popularentertainment in the Iheatre Royal on the evening of the Prince of W ales’ Birthday, The additional inducement of a gift distri • bution is also included in the programme, and Mr Juncker my therefore fairly expect a bumper houseThe Timaru Cricket Club’s match for Saturday next will be England v. Colonies. The respective sides are to be selected this evening, and will appear in our issue of tomorrow. A Committee meeting of the Club is called for this afternoon at the Queen’s Hotel, at spm,. when no doubt some arrangements will be made as to matches to be played during the season. The question of the teaching of chemistry in the schools under the South Canterbury Education Board was introduced at the meeting of that body to day, and after being discussed for some short time, the Rev. Mr Barclay proposed the following resolutions, which were carried viz-: “ That the Board, if its funds will permit, take steps to procure for the use of schools in ,-outh Canterbury, such apparatus of a simple and inexpensive kind, together with certain specimens, chemical, mineral ogi" cal, &c , as shall facilitate the study and teaching of elementary science to the extent required by the syllabus of the Education Department and, “ That the Board obtain two complete sets of the apparatus and specimens enumerated in MacMillan’s Science Primers of fhysics, Chemistry and Geology for the use of schools in South Canterbury.”
