In order to get at a tradesman who successfully contested his right to expose articles for sale oq the footpath, on the ground that his house stood back some feet from the street boundary, tlic corporation has determined to call upon him to fence that spare ground according to the regulations. The imports last quarter were £2,474,638, and for the ’corresponding quarter of 1877 £G,905,73U. The exports last quarter were £0,908,880, for the corresponding quarter of 1878, £882,295.
The vital statistics for the colony iu September are;—Births, 513; deaths, 102. Dunedin gives the highest rate of mortality according to the population, and Napier and the Thames the lowest.
After a discussion on tlie Qualification Electoral Bill, it was read a second time. Very little discussion ensued on the following G-ovcrnment Bills, which were read a second time. —Registration Electoral Bill, Maori Representation Regulation Elections Bill, Corrupt Practices Prevention, Election Petitions, and Triennial Parliaments Bills. The House adjourned at 12.35. The Chamber of Commerce has passed a resolution to the effect that under the present law imprisonment for debt should be abolished, except in cases where a debtor can but will not pay. It is reported that the “ Hew Zealand Times” changed hands yesterday. The Agnes yesterday underran and examined over two miles of cable. She is now engaged picking up and examining the last piece from Lyell’s Bay. The weather is very favorable, and should it continue fine a little longer it is fully anticipated that the cable will be in working order again on Monday. It is understood that Mr Joseph Saunders, of Wellington, is the successful tenderer for Horndon reclamation and the first section of the West Coast railway, the amount being £75,000. A tender from another part of the Colony was very close to that amount. The Government has made a condition that the contractor should find work for the unemployed. This Mr Saunders undertakes to do in a fortnight.
