MR. STALLWORTHY’S DISTRICT.

Since my last report, several important changes have taken place in my district. Its limits have been extended : on the east, Salevalasi, formerly belonging to Mr. Harbutt’s district; and on the west, Safata, with the villages of Siumu and Saanapu, which were previously under the care of Mr. Law, have been added to my former parish of Falealili. The Friendly Island teachers having been recalled, their adherents have united with our party ; one small congregation only, in the village of Salani, Falealili, persisting in separate worship. Popery has made its advent among us in the same village. A few individuals profess to have embraced it. No priest has come to shepherd them; but one took up his residence in Salevalasi, a few weeks ago. He has a few followers there. The population of Falealili and Salevalasi is 2,466 ; and there are, church-members, 103; candidates formembership, 168; scholars, day —boys, 175, girls, 180; evening, boys, 98 ; girls, 107. The population of Safata is about 900; and there are, church-members, 25; candidates, 53; scholars, day —boys, 70, girls, 98 ; evening, boys, 44, girls, 65. Most of the evening scholars are included with those in the day-schools. Subscriptions to the London Missionary Society for the present year, in oil and cash: Falealili, £l6 3s. 1 Od. ; Salevalasi, £9 18s. ; and Safata, £l3 14s. Subscriptions of the several villages to their respective teachers, Falealili and Salevalasi, 622 pieces of native-cloth, including a few pieces of calico ; Safata, 63 pieces. Subscriptions of cinet, native-cloth, and other articles, in aid of Samoan missionary teachers labouring in heathen lands, 322 pieces. Books sold this year: 433 New Testaments, 154 Psalms, 81 Pcntateuchs, and a number of other books in separate portions sold and distributed gratuitously among the teachers and others. Nov. 25, 1854. G. Stallworthy.
