MANUA.
The eastern groupe of the Samoan Islands, including the islands of Tau, Olosega, and Ofu. The population of these islands is as follows : — Tau, the largest island of the groupe 820 Olosega, the middle island 271 Ofu, the leeward island 220 Total population of the groupe 1311 Of these islands, Olosega and Ofu may be said to form but one, for they are separated by so narrow and shallow a strait, that the natives can wade from the one to the other at low water; and Tau, the largest of the groupe, is separated from these by a strait of only a few miles, so that the natives hold constant intercourse throughout the islands. The church on this groupe consists, at present, of 120 members; and there are, besides, 177 inquirers. A good proportion of both church-members and inquirers can read. The schools for both adults and children on Tau are well conducted, and the people seem advancing in knowledge, under the care of Tauga, the native teacher, whose labours appear likely to prove a great blessing.
