REPORTS OF THE STATE OF PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS, AND THE SEVERAL MISSION DISTRICTS IN SAMOA, With occasional notices of statistics, &c.

INSTITUTION FOR THE EDUCATION OF NATIVE TEACHERS.

This institution, the object of which is to afford a suitable education, both Theological and general, to pious young natives, with a view to prepare them for the work of Teachers and Evangelists, either at home or abroad, was commenced in the year 1839, and was for a tim? under the Tutorship of Mr. Hardie, and afterwards of Mr. Day; has already enlarged, and to some extent furnished, the minds of many teachers who are now employed either at our numerous outstations in Samoa, or as pioneers and assistants in the New Hebrides, Loyalty, and New Caledonia. It has been for some months suspended, pending the arrangements and jemovals connected

with our High School. It is in future to be conducted on the same premises as the High School, and Messrs. Day, Hardie and Turner, are appointed joint Tutors of the two Institutions; it is intended to re-open these institutions after a two months vacation of the High School. Since the suspension of the formal Native Teachers Class, several of the brethren have been teaching each his class of young men, for the same objects, as will appear from their several reports.
