Waiouru school enjoy swimming day
by Anne McElwain With a full day's programme, the senior school pupils at Waiouru School had a great day out for their annual swimming sports. Divided into year groups as well as by their respective classrooms, the children got into the competitive spirit ' with much cheering and encouragement from those on the sidelines.
Serious swimming strokes were interspersed with fun relays and races designed for everyone to be able to have a chance to participate. Some of the ideas created havoc at each end of the pool, especially the clothes relay in which articles of clothing were swapped from swimmer to swimmer - not an easy feat when you are wet and tired after a fastlength! The final event was the tug-of-war with the rope stretched over the pool and the competitors lined up on
each side. The idea of this event was that the losers would get wet when they were pulled into the water by the winners. Unfortunately for the spectators, the teams were quite evenly matched and only one team member actually got wet. All the other matches were declared a draw . With two classrooms or teams competing in each year group the winners were: Year 4 -Rm 10; Year 5 -Rm 7; Year 6 -Rm 5; Year 7 -Rm 1 and Year 8 -Rm 2. • However, there were very few points separating the winning room in each year group.
