By

Anne

McElwain

The first annual general meeting of the new Waiouru Kindergarten was held last week with the name change and election of officers being the main points on the agenda. Sue Hercock, Wanganui Kindergarten Executive Board representative, chaired the meeting and announced the new name. A ballot system led to the clear choice of Waiouru Kindergarten by parents and committee members with the second choice of Mountain View Kindergarten gaining only half as many votes. The new chairperson for Waiouru Kindergarten is Craig Spinks, with Lynne Moore as vice-chairperson and cleaning contact. The treasurer is Janiene Burton and the secretary is Joe Beyer-Rieger. Six people offered their services for the committee. The first committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, 23 July, in the first week of the new term. Ms Hercock has undertaken for the board to arrange for a new sign to be made and.indicated that the opening ceremony will be held in approximately six weeks time. Outgoing head teacher of Keningston Kindergarten Margie Denehy, is preparing to move on after five years' teaching kindergarten in Waiouru. She is taking up a position at Homedale Kindergarten in Rotorua and plans to "keep developing her skills in the outdoors, particularly concentrating on her preparation for the next Coast to Coast." Shelley Newson is the new head teacher at Waiouru Kindergarten although this position is yet to be confirmed. She was the relieving head teacher at Weir Terrace Kindergarten from February until June. "I have been lucky enough to work with both sets of parents and children and I am looking forward to working with both sets together as we are really well resourced and have a great committee," she said.
