Skate park plans ready, site yet to be chosen
Plans for Ohakune's skate park are ready for construction and the council is now awaiting a decision on where to site the park. . They have two options, next to the netball courts in Christie Park, and behind the swimming baths in Jubilee Park. Sport Ruapehu coordinator Cath Campbell said they now want to know the community's preference and why, and calls on people to phone or write to her, or write to the Bulletin. The park design has been put together by local DJ Jason King, who took the best features of all of the designs submitted as part of the recent competition. These plans have been approved by the council's property officer, and the $5 1,000 funding, from the Ohakune reserves contribution, has been approved.
Christie Park is the more accessible of the two sites, is in full view of the passing public and is near to public toilets. The Jubilee Park site is close to the swimming pool in an area that could later be developed for a number of recreational facilities. Waimarino Community Board members will make a recommendation to the council on the site, once a report has been prepared by Mrs Campbell and the property officer. Work is expected to be started in summer, with a number of offers of help from adult skateboarders to ensure the features are built with the right angles and shapes. "Council staff are really keen to get some input from the users to make sure they get a facility that serves the purpose," said Mrs Campbell.
