Waiouru Cubs enjoy weekend 'camp'

By

Nineteen cub scouts staying at the Scout Den in Waiouru last weekend earned their cub campers and camp cookers' badges for their efforts and persistence during the camp.

The involvement of their cub leader, Kevin Greenem, along with several other parents, made the weekend a great hit for the children. With 27 children in total, aged from eight to 10 & 1/ 2 years, the pack has grown rapidly since May 1996 when it started up again in Waiouru. The pack has two girls among its members. Although the group is faced with the usual problems associated with fund-

raising and lack of numbers of parents helping, they were fortunate in being able to invest a new leader over the weekend. Alene Lanigan has been interested in the scouting moveTurn to Paqe 8

She has completed each of the stages of training and received her warrant to be a leader with the Waiouru Cub Scouts as part of the weekend's activities. The weekend was well organised with the cubs arriving on Friday night to set up their tents and bedding. Cooking the sausages required more than a little ingenuity when the barbecue broke down but the cubs soon had it under control. There was little sleep that night so breakfast was brought forward to 6: 15am. With clean-up duties and mask-mak-ing, it was soon time to head out for a walk before lunch. The weather halted the original plan of heading out around Waitangi but the gym was reserved for the afternoon so any child not tired out after the walk would have a second chance to burn up some energy. The camp-fire planned for the after-dinner entertainment proved to be hilarious as each 'six' had to provide a skit, a story and two jokes for the rest of the group. Sunday 's clean-up was followed by 'Cubs' Own'- a mini-church service - before heading off home.
