Possum hunters back in business
Successful possum huntirig is no longer a case'of going out and grabbing a few skins to make a quick killing in the fur trade. Fur prices have been in a slump for a few years and possum hunters have been finding it tough to earn a dollar. That is changing with the introduction of hunting contracts, offered by a number of regional councils, the Department of Conservation and the Animal Health Board. They are serious about possum hunting and want hunters who are serious about possum hunting. That means more than just being able to kill possums. Hunters must now be able to put in properly prepared tenders and be able to run their business in a professional and businesslike way. The New Zealand Possum Fur Producers Association has responded by establishing a five-day training camp on tenders and contracts for hunters. The training covers the process for submitting tenders as well as the pricing of a contract and general business skills. Essential issues such as obligations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act and tax obligations are included.
