Ruapehu libraries costs drop by $19,000

Councillors will have to decide if the current allocation of funds for the district' s libraries is adequate, too little or too much. This was the reply given by Ruapehu District Council's acting CEO Chris Ryan to Cr Bob Peck who had asked during discussion on the Draft Annual Plan what proportion of the total general rate revenue intake was spent on district libraries. The answer given was $210,000 or 6.2 percent

of the general rate. The proposed budget for district libraries in the 1997/98 year is $242,000 as compared with $261,000 in the 1996/97 year. According to the Draft Annual Plan this reduction is due to the management of district libraries being taken over by the Ruapehu District Council's community services manager with part time staff working longer hours.
