From a wing and a prayer to a swing and a dare!

While still completing a gliding module with the local club in Raetihi, the Ruapehu Ven turer Unit has been out and about doing more adventurous activities as part of their Scouting programme. Recently six members of the Unit went to the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuit Centre where they spent the day on the high rope course seen on TV's "Blood, Sweat and Fears", under the expert guidance of qualified OPC staff. For some, bravado and confidence on solid ground turned to wobbly knees and jitters when, although harnessed, they were suddenly confronted with a 40-60 foot drop to the ground. Others surprised themselves by completing feats they would othe, rwise never- have contemplated. Kaye McMaster, a parent help and driver for the day, found herself being encouraged to fling herself into space for the final swing to the finish. "I can't believe I just did that!" was all she could say in breathless response to congratulations from daughter Rebecca. At present the unit is participating in a series of fire brigade skills sessions with local Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade personnel. Any youth aged 14&1/2 to 18 interested in joining Venturers can contact Garry Godfrey on 385-9028.
