Rangitikei Primary Schools rugby
The Annual General Meeting of the Rangitikei Primary Schools Rugby Union was held recently. The chairman Pt Rhodes, principal of St Josephs School in Taihape was reelected and Tim Hocquard, principal of Taihape Primary School as re-elected as secretary/treasurer. Coaches and selectors for the year were also elected. The Northern Zone position is filled by Merv Williams of Raetihi, the successful coach of the 1996 team and the Southern Zone position has been filled by Robbie Toulmin of Turakina. Trials will be held in Marton on Tuesday 24 June for the Southern team which involves schools from the Bulls, Turakina to Ohingaiti area and on Thursday 26 June for the Northern team which involves schools from the area Mangaweka to Raetihi . The two teams then play each other on Wednesday 23 July to select a team to represent Rangitikei at the Primary Schools Quadrangular Tournament which is to be held in Palmerston North on 5, 6 and 7 September. A training camp will be held at Waiouru for the players from 30 August until 15 September. A game has been arranged with King Country at Taumarunui on 7 August with other games to be organised. The players in this tournament must be currently at primary school and under 54kg at the opening of the tournament.
Last year the tournament was staged at Marton between Rangitikei, Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki with Rangitikei running out the winners.
