Waiouru children visit Bulletin
Nine children from Room 30 at Waiouru Primary School were given a tour of the Ruapeka Bulletin premises last week to learn all about the making of a newspaper. The children helped write an article about their visit to the Bulletin office with their highlight being making an advertisement to sell their teacher's re-cently-acquired car! They were then shown how a story is placed into the newspaper columns and adjusted to make it fit in with photos and advertisements. Several junior school children are taking part in a Newspapers In Education programme sponsored by the Evening Standard newspaper in Palmerston North. A regular page, titled 'Leaps and Bounds", provides activities and fun graphics on each of the units. Geared at the Year 2-4 (J2-S2) junior classes, the children are encouraged to focus on both the outlay and the content of newspapers. The first unit covered such topics as headlines, the weather, use of photos and captions while the second one has concentrated on New Zealand and their home town, both from an historical perspective and a modern-day view. The children will be covering such diverse topics as Operatioii Starship, sports heroes, chemistry in the kitchen and cats during the final two terms and will have a scrapbook filled with their activities to show for their efforts in each unit.
