Queens congratulations

• May I, 'through your columns, extend congratulations to Nancy Winter and Garrick Workman for the Queens Service Medal honour bestowed on them in the Queens Birthday honours. Congratulations must also be extended to Rex, husband of Nancy, and Maureen, wife of Garrick as without all their

help and support over the years these honours may not have been possible. However, I do take to task the Bulletin for the wording of the heading of their news item and I quote: "Queens honours for Workman and Winter". Both of these persons have Christian names and it was very inappropriate of the Bulletin in just using their surnames. It is a great honour to have two of our very own citizens recognised publicly and they certainly deserve to have their Christian names used first and foremost in relative news items.

Wise.

Editor replies: The Bylletin also extends congratulations to Nancy Winter and Garrick Workman for their awards and our best wishes to their families and supporters. Unlike daily newspapers who knew on the Friday, the Bulletin was not given any prior information about the Queens Birthday Honours list and, due to the holiday on Monday 2 June, our paper was already finished when we heard the great news. However, we managed to make a small amount of space available and squeezed the story onto the front page. Using their full names would have created a headline that would have been inappropriately small. It is accepted newspaper style to use surnames only in headlines. I referredto Ruapehu District councillor Graeme Cosford in this manner on the same page and I note you choose not to take offence at that. A fuller story about Queen's honours recipient Garrick Workman, complete with Christian name, appears in this Bulletin and we hope to bring you a profile of Nancy Winter next week.
