Crotons Road already expensive
• In an article on your front page, 3 June 1997, council's acting chief executive Chris Ryan gave a hypothetical scenario where commercially managed roads would see farming at the end of Crotons Road becoming very expensive. Well, I believe that the removal of the Ruapehu District Council from roading improvements just might actually prove of great financial benefit to rural ratepayers. The first 7km from my Crotons Road property, the ^ council has totally wasted over $250,000 through faulty roading practices and over-runs, $90,000 on just one job alone. This has happened after council was provided with a video and photos of the problems that were causing road damage. Council ignored the facts. Any private business acting in this manner would be bankrupt. Of course the Ruapehu District Council won ' t go broke while we allow them to raise our rates to pay for their mistakes and inefficiencies. An investigation of Ruapehu District Council's activities by Transit New Zealand is long oVerdue.
