Water works for Ohakune and Raetihi

Water main projects in Ohakune and Raetihi are to be carried out in 1997/98 according to the Ruapehu District Council's Draft Annual Plan. The water main in Rimu Street, Ohakune, was to have been replaced in the 1996/97 year (cost, $1 8,000) but the work was deferred so that it could be carried out in conjunction with road and stormwater works. The existing water main in Raetihi' s Alexandra Road is to be replaced (cost, $23,000) to reduce the high maintenance costs due to continual breaks and leaks. Another cost allowed for in the plan is for the upgrading of Ohakune' s water treatment plan, including the provision of a separate storage facility for calcium hypochlorite, used to disinfect water in the event of a prolonged power cut in which case the UV sterilisation unit would be out of action. At present this chemical is housed within the plant itself and is causing extensive metal corrosion. $14,000 is also budgetted for a concrete hard-stand outside the main entrance to the plant.
