Fire safety at station visit

Children from Rooms 21, 23 and 24 of the junior department at Waiouru Primary School have been learning about the clothing that firemen wear and the reasons for having a hard helmet, gloves and fire-proof coats and pants. They have also been learning about the type of work done by the firemen which includes attending car accidents as well as fires. The children were given a guided tour of the fire station at Army Training Group last week and were shown all the equipment loaded on a fire engine, then looked inside the

cab and the compartments. It was quite a surprise for most of the children to find that the fire ehgine carried a 'spare fireman' in one of the compartments! The special breathing apparatus was demonstrated by one of the firemen and the children were told that it was important that they call out if they are in a fire so that the fireman can find and rescue them quickly. One of Mrs Russell' s groups were lucky enough to be given a ride in the fire-engine so they could make it back to school on time!
