Ohakune School under the spotlight
Ohakune Primary School was under the microscope of a four-person team from the Education Review Office last week. T eam co-ordinator Judith Titter said the 'discretionary audit' was a follow-up from last year? s review, focussing on actions that were identified as being required under the last review and includes the "whole school community" including the board of trustees, staff and children as well as a meeting with parents. "It is not usual (for ERO) to meet with parents but here, we decided to give the parents an opportunity to meet with us," she said. The Bulletin understands about 15 parents met with the ERO team, some to express concerns and some to express their support of staff and the school. The team follows a "tri-
angulation" format, said Mrs Titter, which involved reading school documents, observing practices carried out at the school; and listening to people. She stressed that the team's focus is on what is best for the children and that they must retain a neutral position, free from influence from any side. They explained that their report would take at least two months to prepare and would be made public then, and no pre-release of information would take place. Last year's review sparked controversy when the review team (not the same as this year' s) released some information verbally to the Ohakune School Board of Trustees several weeks before the written report, which was published in a school newsletter and in the Ruapehu Bulletin. While this information was
notinaccurate, the interpretation of it by the BoT which highlighted some very positive aspects of the school, was seen as misleading by some when the full report came out some months later, said Mrs Titter.
