Marae school marks first 14 weeks
Waimarino 's newest school, Te ' Kura Kaupapa Maori O Ngati Rangi at Maungarongo Marae, has completed its first 14 weeks, covering a wide range of activities for its 21 pupils. In the first term the children visited the local New World supermarket where they were shown food hygiene and preparation. The children were then given the opportunity to prepare and serve a meal to invited guests, parents and board of trustee members. The children had to also set tables and seat guests in an appropriate manner - a recipe for an enjoyable afternoon. Being entertained by the students during the meal was great, said the guests. These activities were part of a health and good eating study completed by the. children. Kaumatua from the Ngati Rangiarea also visited the school. They shared korero (conversation) and passed on knowledge in return for some light entertainment by the children. Both the children and Kaumatua said they enjoyed and gained experience from the visit. The school now also has its very first netball team which, alongside other schools in the district, is taking part in the Saturday morning competitions held at Ruapehu College. Awaiting the arrival of their new uniform, a team of veiy enthusiastic netballers take to the court ready to take the advice of all supporters family and friends. The school thanks Ti Paata Business Consultants who sponsored the purchase of a set of bibs for the team. They also have children who have been given the opportunity to combine with Ohakune midget rugby teams . These children attend training at Ohakune Primary School
every Friday lunchtime. Staff say having a very supportive school community, a committed staff, and a hardworking board of trustees have made for a successful beginning for Te Kura Kaupapa.
