Turoa Tumblers get competitive, but others need coach

The competitive squad of the Turoa Tumblers Gym Club attended the Wanganui Open Gym nastics Competition — the first real competition for the squad and also the first ribbon competition which Turoa Tumblers has attended since 1994 — On Sunday 1 1 May Competitive coaches Claire Mardell and Tina Drayton have worked with the squad, training three times a week. They said the girls all performed well and were a credit to the club. Cassie Nation, participating at Level 5 achieved: beam 7.4, floor 7.0, fifth rotation 7.45, vault 8.5 and bar 7.6. Fiona Lynch taking part at Level 4 was a member of the team which won the bronze medal in the teams event. Her individual scores were: beam 8.75, floor 8.25, fifth rotation 7.6, vault 8.8 and bar 6.0. Donna and Lyndy Deadman, Clare and Rachael Lynch,

Jackie Laurenson and Carie Webb took part in the Level 3 competition. Their individual scores were Donna - vault 8.8, beam 8.45, fifth rotation 7.4, bar 6.65, floor 8.45; Jackie - vault 8.85, beam 8.4, fifth rotation 7.94, bar 7.25, floor 8.55; Clare - vault 8.5, beam 8.25, fifth rotation 7.7, bar 6.6, floor 8.10; Carie - vault 8.3, beam 7.35, fifth rotation 7.7, bar 6.75, floor 7.9; Rachael - vault 7.85, beam 7.65, fifth rotation 6.8, bar 6.9, floor 7.25. Coach needed Although Turoa Tumblers have a keen and enthusiastic competitive squad, thanks to the efforts of the two very competent coaches, as yet, because there is no-one prepared to coach at recreational level, the club has not been able to offer recreational sessions to children this year. If anyone in the Waimarino is willing and able to coach recreational gymnastics — a paid position — they are asked to phone Sue Laurenson on 06-385-8489.
