RDC puts price on plan copies
After receiving unanimous approval from the council last week, copies of the 1997/98 Draft Annual Plan are now available for inspection at local Ruapehu District Council service centres and libraries. Members of the public and any interested organisations are invited to make I submissions to the Plan by 4pm on Friday 20 June so that these submissions can be considered at a special meeting to be held on Monday 30 June before the Plan is formally adopted. Anyone wishing to do so can appear in person in support of their submission when it is considered by the council. Speaking in support of the plan itself last Tuesday Cr Bob Peck asked the council to look at the possibility of distributing copies more widely throughout the community especially to those who really want to participate in the development of that community may be unable to do so if copies are only available at service centres and libraries during business hours. He formally moved that copies be made freely available to everyone who wants one but may not be able to afford the cost of $11.25 GST inclusive per copy. However, the motion was lost, there being no seconder and several councillors spoke against it on grounds of cost. Cr Stuart Shaw said that "every Tom, Dick and Harry" would want one and there would be a significant cost factor. Cr Graeme Cosford also spoke against the motion saying he believed that "everyone who really wants to see a copy will make an effort". Cr Irene Dempsey said she was against distributing free copies more widely because of the additional printing costs.
