Chocolate fish have great appeal!
Last week's appeal in support of the Child Safety Foundation of New Zealand and the Cystic Fibrosis Association of New Zealand made donating fun by offering a chocolate fish for each dollar given. The second annual "Great New Zealand Cadbury Chocolate Fish Day" has proved that this national icon is a successful
drawcard as a fundraiser. In Waiouru, the primary school ran a hat day last Friday, the Army units offered the chocolate fish for sale; and some of the local service stations offered a chocolate fish toevery child securely fastened in their seat belt. Cystic Fibrosis is the most common life-threat-ening disease in the coun-
try, affecting one in 2500 babies, according to regional co-ordinator, Helen McGowan. Itmainly affects ~ the lungs and digestive system and means a life of daily chest physiotherapy, medication with all food, and regular hospitalisation and visits. Sufferers have a restricted and shortened life. Funds will help provide support, medical equipment, research and education by the Cystic Fibrosis Association. The Child Safety Foundation is increasingly concerned that preventable injuries are the major cause of death to young New Zealand children and outnumber deaths caused by all childhood illnesses. Over 300 children are hospitalised each week owing to preventable injuries.. Injuries from burns, scalds, and playground equipment feature highly on the accident reports. Falls alone account for 92 percent of hospital admissions and 46 percent of fatalities. From the appeal, the Foundation will fund a water safety campaign targeting 45 ,000 pre-schoolers and their families, and the donation of Safe Play Story books to 2000 kindergartens and playcentres.
