Basis of election up for review
Council must, in the year before a Triennial Election, carry out a review on the basis of election.
The Local Government Act 1974 requires it to make a decision on the names, boundaries of Wards and the number of members proposed to be elected by the electors of each Ward. Currently the Ruapehu District has a Mayor elected by the District as a whole, plus 14 Councillors. Taumarunui Ward has 5 elected members, the Waimarino Ward has 3, while the Waiouru, National Park and Ohura Wards have 2 elected members each.
Community Boards In addition there are four Community Boards and the Taumarunui Ward Committee. At present the Ohura Community Board has 5 members, National Park Community Board 6, Waimarino Community Board 9, and the Waiouru Community Board 6. The Taumarunui Ward Committee is made up of all the elected Taumarunui Ward members.
