Ohakune group aims to involve all in town's future

The aim of this society is to involve as many people as possible in and around

the Ohakune area for its general betterment. That is the objective of Ohakune' s newest group, named "Ohakune 2000".

Tuesday night last week a group of Ohakune residents met to establish the basic charter for the formation of an incorporated so-

ciety, "to provide a recognisable entity to act as a Vehicle to benefit Ohakune and the surrounding areas". Its mission statement is

"The advancement of all aspects oflife in and around Ohakune." There was some discussion on this point with some

of the group wishing to incorporate a tourism influence into the mission statement. However, it was agreed that to be successful this society has to be a vehicle for a wide range of issues be they of a social or economic nature. "It is the intention of this society to be driven by the wishes of the community. Accordingly it was agreed that membership be set ata minimum of $10 per member, with one vote per fi-

nancial member," stated a spokesperson. It was decided that a management committee consisting of 10 people be formed, with the formal appointments of a chairperson, secretary and treasurer. A quorum will consist of five members. It was felt that the area needed a constituted body to provide an official stamp when dealing with other bodies, for instance governTurn to Page 2

A sub committee was established to formulate a draft charter to establish the ground rules as to what basic guidelines would reflect the needs of the Ohakune district. It was decided to "keep the parameters of operation quite broad based" so that the incorporated society would be able to accommodate interests from a number of sectors of the community, from rubbish collection through to projects such as local airport construction. The next stage is the legal process to establish the incorporated society. Once that is under way there will be another meeting to prioritise goal setting and to elect the management committee. Inaugural members are: Jane Davies, Mike Ryan, Lori Dann, Frank Taylor, John McCarthy, Selwvn Ward, Dave Scott, Dereck Brown, Bob Norling, Ron Rutherford, Jarrod Coburn, Ulwe Kroll, Derek Lessward, Jon King, Frank Broadbent, Marion Miller.
