It wotifd be Mrd toforget tSe drama @|s^|past two seasons on Mount Ru^hu (you kno\y, the e-ruption), « se®what's been haj5pcning since? Y/ell, nothihg actually. Tne last ash erupfion from the crater was early*September 1997. Seismic activity has dropped down to background levels. There have been steam and gas emissions which have got some people excited, but these too fit into the non-eruption background activity picture. But without the lake to act as a filter, the regular bursts of steam show up more easily. The Crater Lake is refilling and the level is now about 90 metres below the outlet. Scientists are still predicting it will take about three years for the lake to fill. Although the bottom of the crater is about 250m below the outlet, the bottom part filled quite quickly because the crater is an inverted cone so the volume of water needed to cover the bottom was much less.
