Locals finish the Fletcher
By Anne McElwain This year fi ve enthuisiastic Waiouru runners entered the 33rd Fletcher Challenge in Rotorua, most of them having made it to the annual event for the last few years. Adopting a "natural ability" philosophy towards their preparation for the big event, Joe Beyer-Reiger and Margie Denehy said that they did very little extra training for the marathon. In spite of the effort involved in running 42 kilometres, Ms Denehy was
reportedly still smiling at the finish line! Billy White succeeded in achieving his aim of completing his fourth marathon in under five hours, blitzing that benchmark by at least 40 minutes. Forestry consultant Angus Malcolm and Steve Hall also completed the marathon successfully but were unavailable for the "team" photograph. Another local runner was Angus Malcolm who completed the race in a time of 4:08: 34.
