Level 12 English (Media Option)

• The junior speech finals were held on Tuesday night with a audience of over 40. All competitors spoke exceptionally well but it was the judges, Mrs W Jervis, Miss K Mareikura and Mr D Seifert, who finalised the winners in this order: first, Kate Woodhouse with her thoughts on slavery; second, Vicky Cranston with a humorous speech about her sister and third, Tamara Taputoro who spoke on friends. • On Monday four students' names were drawn (out of those who had 100 per cent attendance for the first term) for a ride in the Tranz Rail Rescue Helicopter. The winners were Mathew Bowsher, Chaise Tasker, Shanon Hays and Llana Waara. Shanon was unable to fly, so Cameron Atkins took his place when the helicopter visited on Wednesday. • The annual inter-whanau cross country took place on Wednesday on Alan Whale's farm. Participants competed well at all levels and the good weather was a bonus. First girl home was Kirsty Litt (Ohakune Primary),

followed by Erin Martin in the junior girls, Angela Fraser in the intermediate girls, Sarah Mackay in the senior girls; Chris Journeaux in the junior boys, Clay Winter, intermediate boys; and Daniel Forster, senior boys. • The sixth form art and home economics classes went to Auckland on Tuesday with Mrs Stuckey and Miss Rattray, visiting art galleries and industrial work places. At the Tip Top factory they were allowed to eat as much ice cream as they could. The group returned home on Thursday. • On Monday 5 May the equestrian team consisting of Nicola Smith, Cameron Morris, Virginia Morris and Keri Bates travelled to Reporoa for i the annual Inter-College Gymkhana. The team came third overall after Reporoa College in first place and Taupo NuiATia College. Thankswent | to parents, supporters and organiser, Mrs Trask. • The Ruapehu College First XV travelled to Palmerston North on Sunday 4 May for the Manawatu Sevens Competition. The team played well and was ranked 12th out of 24 teams.
