Some fishing waters now closed
Many of the Taranaki Fish and Game Council region rivers and lakes closed to freshwater fishing on Wednesday 30 April. Wanganui based field officer Greg Lydon says anglers need to check their freshwater fishing licence to see whether a river is open for fishing. ' We have produced a free colour guide with a map and regulations to help anglers find the winter open waters". The map is available from all sports stores and licence sellers. "The reason that the majority of our waters close is to allow trout to spawn," said Mr Lydon. "Spawning trout are crucial to a fishery's survival and must be allowed to reproduce without the threat of being caught. Some local lakes such as Wiritoa, Pauri and Kohata close for the duck shooting season which began on Saturday. However, the Waimarino rivers are open until 30 June and Lake Namunamu near Hunterville is open all year. >
