Waiouru Junior achiever
Ten-year-old S a m a n t h a Black has studied dancing since she arrived in Waiouru over three years ago. With classes at the Heather McQueen School ofDanceinTaihape twicea week and some practise at home as well, she is kept busy during her out-of-school hours. She is currently working towards grading exams and hopes to pass Grade 4 in ballet, Grades 3 and 4 in jazz and Grade 1 in tap dancing. Over the three years, Samantha has learnt many original dances from her teacher, Heather McQueen, who she thinks is a "great teacher." She has also acquired a number of beautiful costumes, courtesy of her mother's sewing skills. Samantha recently competed in the Manawatu
dancing competitions alongside children from all over the lower North Island. She won first place in the Tap Duo section and a third place with her Moldavian national dance
in the character section. Her next major competition will
be in Taupo at Queen s Birthday weekend.
