Tourism role diversion plan questioned

Adding council customer service and corporate communications responsibilities to the work of the Ruapehu District Council marketing unit should not be a permanent move, the Ruapehu marketing subcommittee believes. The group considered a report on the management restructure of Council at their April meeting and were advised that the tasks would be undertaken by Marketing in addition to the ongoing tourist marketing activities and management of visitor centres. The marketing subcommittee expressed its concern at this administrative role which could impact on the demands relating to future tourism marketing activities which may be compromised because of this. They believe it was also important that the council, in its core activities, had a marketing focus to encourage development and ensure that the council' s customer service was consistent with the marketing approach that the council has successfully managed. The subcommittee resolved to "express concern to the

council on the increased administration functions placed on the limited resource allocated to the Marketing Unit", and "that when the senior management issues are resolved, that a focus on a full time tourism marketing role be resumed".
