Athletics on again in Raetihi
Twilight athletics has started again in Raetihi after a break of some years. Many parents whose children were keen and who showed potential in school sports, or who just wanted to have a go, got together and kicked things off with the barest of equipment. Keith Haitana, whose family were involved in athletics when they were young, was asked to lend a hand. So every Monday after school around 30-40 children have met to train and compete. The events included sprints to long distance running, long jump, high jump, discus and shot put. The meet included children from the midget level - five years, up to intermediate age of 11. Although the children did not compete out of thei r area this year, the newly-formed club has applied for funding to increase resources and this will allow them to train and compete in a greater variety of events and to travel away to other meets.Theprizegiving was held last Friday evening 1 1
April at the Squash Club in Raetihi with competitors presented with certificates of merit. Cups were also presented to both junior and intermediate girl and boy champions. Cups were donated for senior competitors and some of the cuirent intermediate kids will go up to that level next year.
