Craft group offers great variety
Begun three years ago, Waiouru' s Thursday morning craft group is open to anyone interested in meeting other people and learning a new skill while having some time out from the children. The group meets at 1 Oam each week during the school term for up to 2 hours. The programme is advertised through the Tussock Times and covers a wide range of activities. To date this term the group has
covered hanging plant baskets, liquid embroidery, dinner party presentation and ideas for decorating the table, salt dough modelling, painted light bulbs, time management and patchwork. The remaining two classes will look at self-confidence and covered material boxes. There is a nominal charge of $1 to offset the cost of tea and coffee, and the playgroup is provided free-of-charge. Experienced volunteers supervise the children in a room filled with toys and play equipment. Although it comes under the umbrella of the Waiouru Apostolic Church, ongoing funding for the tutors from the Wanganui Regional Community Polytechnic is provided through the Community Organisation Grants Scheme (COGS). Toys and equipment for the playgroup have been purchased through grants from the J.R. McKenzie Trust and the Early Childhoad Development Unit (ECDU). A television was bought with the support of a grant from the Army Unit Private Fund (UPF). This funding is much appreciated by the Craft Group which would be unable to continue without such support.
