Easter concert for Arcadians

Rehearsals are said to be going well for the Arcadian Singers' Easter concert on Sunday 6 April. Sir John Stainer's "Crucifixion" will be performed by a combined choir of Arcadians and members of the Palmerston North Choral Society. Alison Stewart, known to Taihape audiences as an accomplished organist, will conduct the choir. Alison fills in for the choir' s musical director, Helen Gordon, who has been co-ordinating the New Zealand concert tour of Russian pianist Konstantin Scherbakov, who will perfonh in Taihape on Wednesday 2 April.

Composed in 1889, "The Crucifixion" is the most popular of Sir John's oratories and has great appeal for choral groups as the music is very accessible and beautiful, with sometimes dramatic harmonies. The words are selections from the Bible and from a text by JD Simpson. Part of the work are five hymns that are sometimes omitted, but will be included by the Arcadians. Soloists are Palmerston North tenor Gerry Bennet and Wanganui base Maurice Taylor, accompanied by organist Dianne Halliday. St Margaret's Church in Taihape is the venue.
